CAIRO, Dec 22 (MENA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration organized Sunday a celebration to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In a speech he delivered during the celebration, Minister Badr Abdelatty reviewed the steps taken by Egypt over the past years to improve the human rights situation, praising the pivotal role played by the legislative authority in amending and drafting legislation related to human rights, most notably the new Criminal Procedures bill.
A galaxy of ministers and senior officials attended the celebration.
He also praised the important role of the judiciary and the Supreme Constitutional Court in protecting and defending human rights, and highlighted the initiatives taken by Egypt over the past years under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, most notably the adoption of the first national strategy for human rights and the implementation of its goals.
Several human rights initiatives were launched such as Decent Life and Takaful and Karama, the launch of the national dialogue, and the issuance of presidential pardon decisions.
Abdelatty addressed the launch of the third annual report on the implementation of the National Strategy for Human Rights, praising the efforts made over the past three years by the Permanent Supreme Committee for Human Rights, various governmental bodies, specialized national councils and civil society in this regard.
He stressed the need to uphold the values of human rights and deal with them away from the policy of double standards, and stressed the need for concerted international efforts to stop human rights violations in Palestine. (MENA)
