CAIRO, Feb 12 (MENA) - Egypt is committed to supporting stability and development in Somalia, as well as strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in the different domains, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said on Wednesday.
During a meeting with Somali State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mohamed Omar, Abdelatty stressed Egypt’s support for Somalia’s efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
The two ministers hailed the recent decision, that was taken during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo on January 24, to upgrade bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, saying the move reflects the deeply-rooted ties between the two nations and paves the way for expanded cooperation in security, trade, and investment.
Both sides agreed on the importance of following up the implementation of steps to put into effect this strategic partnership in a way that serves the common interests of their peoples.
They also discussed regional developments in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the need for intensified coordination to address security challenges and support African efforts to maintain regional peace and stability.
The talks also touched on the African Union’s AUSSOM mission in Somalia, with both ministers discussing its formation in line with Somalia’s vision for security and stability. (MENA)
