CAIRO, Feb 2 (MENA) - Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul Gheit said Sunday the displacement of Palestinians from their land represents an existential threat to the Palestinian cause, warning of Israel's scheme to make the Gaza Strip uninhabitable in order to pave the way for its unacceptable scenario that violates international law.
This came during Abul Gheit's meeting with UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza Sigrid Kaag at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
Abul Gheit stressed that the only rational and humane alternative to this unacceptable Israeli scenario is to work in every possible way to enhance relief efforts and accelerate their pace in preparation for pushing forward reconstruction programs.
.
Gamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for Abul Gheit, said that the meeting focused on the catastrophic situation in Gaza, and the need to consolidate the ceasefire agreement, while accelerating the pace of relief efforts to deal with the unprecedented destruction in the Strip.
He added that both officials agreed that the displacement scenario is unacceptable and represents a recipe for instability in the region.
They stressed that displacement is not a condition for achieving reconstruction, noting that existing programs as well as technological and technical capabilities allow the reconstruction of Gaza to begin in the presence of its residents.
Abul Gheit said the two-state solution remains the only formula capable of achieving security and peace for both parties, the Palestinians and the Israelis, warning that without taking serious efforts to set up the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, the region will remain vulnerable to the outbreak of rounds of violence and counter-violence.
