CAIRO, Feb 2 (MENA) – Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty said Sunday Egypt seeks a secure and sustainable flow of aid into the Gaza Strip through border crossings.
In a meeting with Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in the Gaza Strip and Coordinator for the Peace Process, the minister said the Palestinian National Authority has to be helped to restore the ability to carry out its duties in the Gaza Strip.
Egypt is fully ready to allow the entry of the largest possible amounts of aid needed by the Palestinian people, he added.
The minister underlined the importance of supporting the ongoing Egyptian efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Abdelatty discussed with the UN official the outcomes of the meeting held with Arab foreign ministers and other senior officials yesterday, in Cairo, at the political and humanitarian levels, said foreign ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf.
He highlighted the efforts made by Egypt to consolidate the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, implement its three stages, and allow the largest possible amount of humanitarian aid to be delivered to the Gaza Strip.
Abdelatty listened to the UN official's vision and assessment of the latest developments in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and her contacts in this regard.
He urged the international community and UN organizations to intensify efforts to support the Palestinians in Gaza during the next phase, as a detailed discussion took place in this context and on arrangements for a conference that Egypt is scheduled to host, in cooperation with the United Nations, for the reconstruction of the war-devastated enclave.
He said the international community should mobilize its efforts to provide all forms of support needed to contribute to restoring basic services, starting early recovery activities, and rehabilitating the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian top diplomat urged the UN official to continue following up on the implementation of the financial pledges announced by donors during the Cairo Ministerial Conference, which was held last December to enhance the humanitarian response in Gaza. (MENA)
