In a speech during the inauguration of the International Maritime Organization's Regional Presence Office (RPO) for the Arab States in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, IMO's Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez congratulated Egypt for being chosen as a venue for hosting the regional office of the organization in the premises of the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety (EAMS) in the port of Alexandria.

Such a choice is reflecting the strategic importance of Egypt in the maritime transport and shipping industries and the country's firm commitment to developing global maritime traffic, he added, referring to the Suez Canal, which is considered the most important waterways in the world.

The new office will also contribute to boosting cooperation and offering the necessary support for boosting maritime capabilities, he said.

Dominguez also said the office will have a crucial role in implementing technical activities of IMO in the region at large, including mechanisms for promoting maritime safety and security, combating pollution and boosting women's empowerment in the sea transport industry.

It will also contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the key aim of IMO, which has to do with the provision of the safety and security of shipping for all. (MENA)
