CAIRO, June 12 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting on Thursday to follow up on expansion plans of seawater desalination projects and efforts to localize affiliated industry.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Housing Sherif el Sherbini, CEO of ACWA Power Egypt Hassan Amin, Chairman of the Holding Company for Potable Water and Wastewater Mamdouh Raslan along with other senior officials.

Madbouli referred to his meeting with President Abdel Fatah El Sisi on Wednesday that tackled a number of projects that are now being implemented by the state in various fields with a special focus on seawater desalination projects. Talks covered procedures being undertaken with a number of major companies regarding the implementation of new projects in this field, he added.

Madbouli underlined the importance of localizing seawater desalination projects, saying the government targets reaching approximately 9 million m3 per day.

The housing minister said many projects were implemented or either under construction to meet the water needs of future population growth and urban development requirements.

Sherbini said the implemented projects include several water desalination plants in various governorates, including Matrouh, Beheira, South Sinai, the Red Sea, Port Said, and Alexandria.

Upon the directives of President Sisi, efforts are under way to improve the efficiency of existing desalination plants to maximize their potential. (MENA)
