CAIRO, March 19 (MENA) – Assistant Foreign Minister Yasser Sorour said Sudan is directly linked to Egypt’s national security due to its geography, shared history, the Nile water issue, and regional stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
During a meeting with diplomatic correspondents on Wednesday, Sorour stressed that Egypt remains committed to Sudan’s unity and the preservation of its state institutions, warning that their collapse would destabilize the entire region.
He stated that any resolution to Sudan’s crisis must come from within the country without any foreign interference.
The assistant minister recalled Egypt’s role in hosting the Sudanese Political and Civil Forces Conference in July 2024, bringing together major Sudanese factions to discuss their country’s future without external influence.
He affirmed that Egypt was the only country able to facilitate such talks, providing Sudanese leaders with a platform to determine the next steps for their nation.
He said Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty is in continuous discussions with international counterparts to prevent foreign-imposed solutions on Sudan. He reaffirmed Egypt’s stance against external pressures that could dictate Sudan’s political path.
The senior diplomat stated that Egypt opposes attempts by the UN Security Council and some countries to impose conditions on humanitarian aid delivery.
He noted that discussions with Sudanese officials have led to extending operations at the Qustul border crossing to facilitate aid flow.
He added that Egypt is coordinating with UN agencies to ensure efficient aid distribution and increase relief flights.
The assistant minister pointed out that the Sudanese army has recently made progress in regaining control over Khartoum. He described this as a shift in the conflict, as previous fighting was concentrated in Port Sudan and other limited areas.
He strongly rejected attempts by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied political groups to establish a parallel government. He warned that such moves threaten Sudan’s unity and risk prolonging the conflict.
He noted that Egypt and several other countries have firmly opposed these actions, reaffirming their commitment to Sudan’s territorial integrity.
The Egyptian diplomat said Egypt continues to engage with European and regional partners to support Sudanese-led solutions.
He mentioned that an international conference on Sudan is scheduled in London on April 15, where Egypt will reaffirm its stance and push for a diplomatic resolution that preserves Sudan’s unity and stability. (MENA)
