WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (MENA) – Egypt’s Ambassador in Washington Motaz Zahran represented President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at the official funeral and memorial service for late US president Jimmy Carter, held at the National Cathedral in Washington.
Sisi had received an official invitation from Carter's family and delegated Zahran to attend on his behalf.
US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and numerous senior officials and diplomats were present to pay last respects to the deceased, the 39th President of the United States who served from 1977 to 1981 and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.
Zahran highlighted Egypt’s recognition of Carter’s pivotal role in advancing peace and humanitarian values, noting that Carter and late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat symbolized unwavering dedication to achieving just peace as their collaboration left a lasting mark on political and human history.
Zahran also praised Carter’s humanitarian legacy, describing him as a beacon of universal love and fraternity.
During the memorial service, speeches by President Joe Biden, Carter’s family, and close friends drew parallels between Carter and Sadat, emphasizing their historic roles as architects of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty, which has stood resilient over decades.
The ambassador also participated in Carter’s memorial service on January 7 at the US Capitol, where dignitaries, including Vice President Kamala Harris, paid tribute to Carter’s enduring political and cultural legacy, particularly his instrumental role in Middle East peace. (MENA)
