CAIRO, Jan 1 (MENA) – The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has issued a detailed report explaining Egypt’s new mobile phone registration system.
The system, implemented by the Egyptian Customs Authority and the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), aims to regulate unregistered devices, protect users from counterfeit products, and ensure market integrity.
The ministry highlighted that device registration applies to the mobile phone itself, not the user’s identity. Fees, calculated as a percentage of the device's value, can only be paid through the official "Telephony" app or customs checkpoints upon arrival to Egypt.
Notifications will be sent to users of unregistered devices before payment is required.
For locally purchased phones, registration and fee inquiries are handled via the Telephony app.
Travelers bringing phones from abroad can register their devices at customs or later through the app. The ministry reassured users that activating additional SIMs in devices operational before the system launch incurs no extra fees, and replacements through authorized dealers require no further registration.
The ministry urged users to rely on official channels for all registration processes and directed them to the Telephony app or the official website for assistance and accurate information. (MENA)
