CAIRO, March 31 (MENA) - Former Prime Minister Kamal Ganzouri died on Wednesday at 88 after a prolonged battle with disease.

Ganzouri was born in Garwan village, near Bagouri city in the delta governorate of Menoufia on January 12, 1933.

He received a doctorate in economy from the US university of Michigan and worked as a professor at the National Planning Institute in 1973 then under secretary of the Ministry of Planning from 1974 till 1975.

He was tapped for the post of deputy prime minister and minister of national planning in 1987 and prime minister from from January 1996 till October 1999.

He worker as a professor at various Egyptian universities and training institutes and also worked as an economic advisor at the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa and a member of a presidential body.

He was the architect of the 20-year plan which started in 1983 and ended in 2003 which enabled Egypt to surpass the collapse period and was also the architect of the five-year economic plan.

He planned a number of mega projects in Egypt including agricultural projects in Toshka, Owainat, Upper Egypt and Sinai. (MENA)
