CAIRO, July 2 (MENA) – The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the final version of a government-drafted bill amending provisions related to rental laws and reorganizing the relationship between landlords and tenants, in a session chaired by Speaker Hanafi Gebali.

The parliament had given preliminary approval to the draft law during Tuesday’s general session, before continuing article-by-article discussions on Wednesday. Lawmakers passed the bill in a standing vote after approving a government-proposed amendment to Article 8 of the draft.

The legislation aims to establish a fair and sustainable balance between landlords and tenants by addressing distortions caused by previous exceptional rent laws, which led to depressed rental values and undermined social justice—particularly amid shifting economic conditions.

The amendments are part of the state’s broader effort to enact corrective measures to resolve challenges stemming from decades-old exceptional rental laws, which applied to both residential and non-residential properties. Many of these issues have been flagged by Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court. Authorities say the outdated laws have had adverse effects on society, the national economy, and the real estate sector.
