CAIRO, June 2 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Monday reiterated Egypt’s longstanding commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, emphasizing the country’s leading role in supporting a world free of nuclear weapons.

In a meeting in Cairo with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, Sisi stressed the need to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He also expressed Egypt’s support for strengthening the IAEA’s efforts to promote the universality of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty and General Intelligence Service chief Hassan Rashad.

According to presidential spokesman Mohamed el-Shennawy, Sisi opened the talks by praising the IAEA’s role in advancing global peace and security through nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, while also maximizing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. He welcomed ongoing efforts to expand cooperation between Egypt and the agency.

IAEA chief Grossi, for his part, commended Egypt’s active and historic role in promoting disarmament and its ongoing efforts in this field.

The talks also touched on regional developments, with Sisi highlighting Egypt’s efforts to restore stability in the region. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address all aspects of regional security to ensure lasting peace in the Middle East.
